Taormina: Beautiful, Overwhelming, and Yet Still Worth It
In general, I couldn’t tell that Taormina was my favourite place in Sicily. And the disappointment hit a bit harder than expected, because the expectations were… high. Maybe too high.
If you’ve seen photos of Taormina, you already know why. Everything about it looks unreal. The kind of place that feels almost too perfect to exist. And in many ways, it is exactly that. But also not.
This One Isn’t About Looking Up
I say this a lot about Sicily. Look up. Always look up. Taormina is different, however. Here, everything pulls your eyes outward instead. Out to the sea. Out to the horizon. Out to the queen of the show - Mount Etna.
Touristic or not, you absolutely cannot deny the beauty of this place.
Taormina sits high above the coast, with Mount Etna watching from the side. The elegance of the town against something so raw and powerful. That is a feeling worth experiencing.
Beautiful and threatening at the same time.
Even on a cloudy day, when Etna hides, you can feel it there. And that feeling alone explains why people have been coming here for more than two thousand years.
The Theatre
If there is one place that defines Taormina, it is the ancient Greek Theatre.
Built in the 3rd century BC and later expanded by the Romans, it is not just a historical site. It is an experience. You walk into it and immediately feel that shift. You’ve stepped into something that has seen far more than you ever will.
On a clear day, Etna rises right behind the stage. It is one of those rare places where history and nature align perfectly. This is usually the moment I look forward to the most when visiting ruins. That quiet feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. I swear sometimes you even feel the thousands of people that walked the road for you all those centuries before.
And this time was no different. The theatre itself did not disappoint. But the experience… did.
I spent a long time trying to get the perfect shot for you. And failed. The place wasn't even that busy, but it was surely touristic.
People sitting right in front of the Etna view, opening snacks, having drinks, standing exactly where everyone else wants to stand. And yes, of course, I know. It is a famous place. People are allowed to enjoy it.
But somehow, it felt… off. Disrespected even.
There is a caffe right there, where you can sit, rest, take your time. And yet the most iconic viewpoint turns into a picnic spot. Maybe it’s a small thing and I am exaggerating. But in a place like this, it changes the feeling.
And I think that was the moment where my expectations and reality finally clashed.
The Polished Side of Sicily
Walking through Taormina feels different from the rest of the island. More polished, international. Americanised even.
You notice it in the shops, in the restaurants, in the overall atmosphere. And especially in the prices. There is no way around it. Taormina is expensive.
Coffee, dinner, accommodation, even small things. Everything is just a little higher here. And while Sicily is usually known for its warmth and relaxed pace, here it felt a bit more rushed.
Not in a bad or rude way. But you could feel that this is a place that receives millions of tourists annually... And acts accordingly. This is one of the most visited places on the island after all.
A Very Taormina Moment
However, even in moments when you think you know it all, Sicily always finds ways to surprise you. And this place was no different. Though the surprise came in an especially unusual way this time.
We walked into a funeral procession. Of course, we didn’t film anything. But one detail stayed with us. The funeral car was a Maserati.
I’ve seen many things in Sicily. But a funeral Maserati was a first. And somehow, it fits Taormina perfectly. Regardless if you enter this world or leave it, in Taormina, you do it in style.
So, Is Taormina Worth Visiting?
Yes. Without hesitation, yes. Just adjust your expectations accordingly.
If you come here thinking it will be quiet, authentic, untouched Sicily, you will probably feel disappointed like I did at first.
If you come prepared for crowds, higher prices, and a more polished version of the island, you will see it differently.
Because at the end of the day, Taormina is still one of the most beautiful places in Sicily. There is no denying that.
So, what would I do differently the next time visiting Taormina?
- Come early in the morning or later in the evening
- Stay for a day, not necessarily overnight
- Accept the crowds instead of fighting them
- Focus less on getting the perfect shot and more on just being there
Because the beauty is still there. You just have to meet it on its terms.
Final Thoughts
We will be back.
To see Etna without clouds. To walk the same streets with different expectations. To give Taormina another chance. And I think that’s the right way to approach it.
Not the perfect postcard destination, but a place that is a little complicated, a little overwhelming, and still undeniably worth seeing.
