Favignana. A Day Trip To Paradise

Favignana. A Day Trip To Paradise

I must admit something. Our visit to Favignana was one of the most impressive days we have experienced in Sicily so far. Yet if you asked me exactly why, I honestly do not think I could give you one clear answer. Sometimes a place simply feels right.

We massively underestimated Favignana before arriving. We thought we had planned the perfect day. There would be plenty of time for swimming, filming, exploring the island and visiting all the places we had marked on the map.

Oh, were we wrong. We arrived in the morning, rented our bikes and immediately headed towards Cala Rossa. The plan was simple. Stop for a few photos, take some footage, admire the famous view and continue exploring.

Instead, our entire day fell apart. And I must admit I am so glad it did.

The beach that took over our plans

The moment we arrived at Cala Rossa, the island completely took over. As content creators, we are usually quite disciplined when we visit a new place. We film first, explore second and relax later. That strategy lasted approximately five minutes in Favignana.

The water was simply impossible to ignore. So instead our filming plan we found ourselves swimming, sitting on the rocks, enjoying the views and repeatedly saying that we should probably continue exploring the island.

We never seemed to manage it.

Throughout the entire day, we all kept repeating the same sentence. "This is what we expected Sicily to feel like."

If you have read our previous blog posts, you probably know that Sicily surprised us in many ways. Most of those surprises were positive.

The island is far more developed than many people imagine. The cities are vibrant, businesses (at least some of them) are thriving and daily life feels much more modern than the stereotypes would suggest. Traditional Sicilian life exists alongside industry, innovation and growing international communities.

Favignana felt different. An impersonation of Sicily life stereotype in the best possible way. The Mediterranean beach vacation dream. This island seems completely focused on one thing and one thing only: enjoying life.

An island to forget yourself in

For a relaxed beach holiday, I genuinely struggle to think of a better destination in Europe.

The beaches are stunning. People are (or at least seem) happy, nobody appears to be in a hurry and swim suit is an acceptable outfit for most places (excluding restaurants, of course). You can cycle around the island, stop wherever you like and spend hours doing absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it.

There is also something about Favignana that is difficult to describe. Call it atmosphere, energy or simply the effect of being surrounded by beautiful water all day.

Whatever it is, you feel it almost immediately after arrival. Well, perhaps not immediately. First you need to survive the bike rental chaos near the port. After that, relaxation arrives very quickly.

A small warning

There is one thing I think visitors should know before arriving. Many of Favignana's most famous beaches are not easy-access.

The rocks can be very sharp and getting into the water often requires a bit of climbing and balance. We considered swimming shoes absolutely necessary, obligatory even, particularly at Cala Rossa.

For us, it was completely worth it. However, if you struggle with mobility, balance or uneven terrain, some of these beaches may be difficult or potentially unsafe.

I do not say that to discourage anyone from visiting. Only because I could easily imagine someone slipping on the rocks and getting hurt.

It is always better to know what to expect.

The history we... fully intended to experience

One thing that still makes me laugh is that we arrived with every intention of learning about Favignana's history.

The island is famous for its old tuff quarries, known as cave di tufo. These quarries helped shape not only Favignana but much of western Sicily. Many of the dramatic rock formations you see around the island are actually the result of centuries of stone extraction.

We had planned to explore them properly. Instead, we spent most of the day in the water.

No regrets. Sorry not sorry. Sometimes you visit a place and feel compelled to learn everything about it.

Sometimes you visit a place and simply enjoy being there. Favignana was the second type.

Don't forget the golden lunch rule

One final piece of practical advice. Do not leave lunch too late.

Sicily remains wonderfully loyal to its lunch traditions and many restaurants stop serving food surprisingly early by northern European standards. Lunch is served from 12 to around 14. And eating earlier or later might as well the a crime.

We almost learned that lesson the hard way... AGAIN! Fortunately, the restaurant staff took pity on us and allowed us to have our meal and drinks even though they were preparing to close.

It was one of those small moments of Sicilian hospitality that stays with you long after the trip ends.

We will be back... and soon

What probably says the most about Favignana is that even though there are still countless places in Sicily that we want to explore. There are islands we have never visited, towns we have never seen and entire corners of the island that remain on our list.

And yet we are already planning a return to Favignana. That says quite a lot.

It was honestly one of my favourite days in Sicily so far. And I am not the only one! The beaches, atmosphere (or pure magic? Who knows), cycling, sunshine, happy people and absolutely relaxed feeling. What's not to like?

Plus, in our case, good company certainly helped as well. So if you are considering visiting Favignana, my advice is simple.

  1. Book the ferry early, it does tend to get booked out quickly.
  2. Rent a bike and it is okay to be a little lazy - we also got the electric bikes! :D For 10 euros a day per bike that was all we needed. And if you wish to avoid the absolute chaos of the bike rentals at the port, head into town - you will find some calmer spots there.
  3. Bring swimming shoes. I did see some Sicilians walk around without them and that is of course impressive, but don't be a hero. The rocks are sharp and slippery and an injury is probably not how you want to remember your vacation!
  4. Take your time. That is part of the magic. Sicilians do not rush anywhere, so why should you?
  5. And, last but not least, be prepared for your plans to fall apart completely. Allow the island to take over. Sometimes those end up being the best days.
